One Piece (Netflix Live Action Season 1)

Ok. Before I dive in, this is not a kids show despite the fact that anime could pass as one. Making a live action pirate based story which has any degree of relatability kind of kills that. It has violence, swearing, some scary scenes and some emotionally complex topics to cover.  With that out of the way; I have actively avoided One Piece as an anime for YEARS. I've tried on numerous occasions to get into it and every time something just pulled me away; the animation style, the voices, the insanity. I could not fathom, for the life of me, how this thing was SO FREAKIN' popular. Then I saw that it was getting a live action adaption. So, I tried a different angle. I read the manga. I started about 150 chapters in thinking it was just that the beginning of the series was terrible. This dropped me in right before the Alabasta Arc (exact naming dependent up your source medium). Incidentally, I went looking around the internet for suggestion on where to start and a lot of people sai...

Disney's Elemental

Not sure I under why this one got such bad reviews. In a lot of ways I think this is actually a masterful piece of story telling, it is very down to Earth and real in a lot of senses and it is a perfect chaser to something like Nimona if you want a completely different approach to making a topic more approachable and understandable.  My rough review is here: Quality: 7/10 Story: 8/10 Message: 10/10 Overall: 8/10 Quality: Obviously with a big budget studio behind it, the quality is pretty high. Also, it is animated which really helps I think. It is visually impressive and cohesive. I don't really have a lot to say here which does seem at odds with the high rating. But, for animated films I feel like quality is more of a gut-check thing for the most part. Story: The story is a lot of things. It is clearly about discrimination, most notably cultural. It is also about the bonds between parents and their children. And it dives a bit into loss as well. But, those are also more about the ...

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

Rented this one a couple of weeks back and watched with my wife and daughter. This is one of the first movies in a long time which my daughter has not watched on repeat. And that says a lot, for a few reasons; she watches almost everything repeatedly, this was a Google TV rental so we only had it for a few days (and she gets FOMO about access disappearing to movies/shows) and it was about a topic she is OBSESSED with; teenagers. My daughter is not a teenager. She just idolizes everything about teenagers and high school because she is a pre-teen. (Yeah, that's a cop out answer). So, Ruby Gillman. It is a nice coming of age story with some good family messages and some weak attempts at some messaging about friendships. I can't really imagine an age group it wouldn't be appropriate to watch around so it is pretty good in that respect. And while it isn't a bad movie, I don't think anyone in our family would have labelled it as a good one either. My rough ratings are as ...

Nimona

Nimona at a high level, in my opinion, is a story about a pair of outcasts struggling with how society perceives them and the challenges they face trying to just live the way that they want to live. I FULLY understand that there are much more specific themes that the author and other creative minds involved are trying to get across. But the strength of Nimona actually lies in how well it handles this as an abstract. But more on that later. My rough ratings are as follows: Quality: 6/10 Story: 8/10 Message: 10/10 Overall: 8/10 Quality: The movie is good. But in terms of quality, it is hard to say much else. There was never a point where I wanted to stop watching it. However, there also were not any points where I was "gripped" and felt compelled to continue watching it. The fact that I didn't feel any urge to stop does say one positive thing though; the pacing is good. And for that reason, it tips a notch past the half-way mark for me.  On the comedic side of things, there...
